Now that the excitement of the holidays and New Year’s has died down, it’s time to get down to the business of writing again. Last time I posed the question “What are you working on?,” I got a wide variety of responses from proofreading ebooks to writing podcasts and magazine articles. This time I’m betting we’ll get a similarly varied reaction.
I’ll go first. I’m working on catalogue copy for several retail companies, a newsletter article for a professional organization of writers, and copyediting for a soon-to-launch career website. I also have some queries to polish and get out the door. What about you? Any new and exciting projects? What’s on your to do list for this week?

A children's story that is in its infancy but has been in my head and notes for years. It's time.
I've gotten some gigs writing content for online markets, so that's been regular work (at least 3 pieces a week). Plus my own articles, which are in various stages of completion.
I'm working on a nonprofit magazine article and some writing for a foundations relations department. I'm a new freelancer, so I'm also working on getting my website up-and-running, putting together a couple of queries, and learning Twitter.
Susan, thanks for all the great tips you post on The Urban Muse! They have been invaluable to me!
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to post a link to my food blog since that's not what you do on this site. I think it just came up in connection with my gmail account.
Thanks!
I'm trudging through my first real attempt at a novel. Young Adult Paranormal. It's a very painful process, at least at first, isn't it?
Romance, which is usually not my thing . . .but this story just keeps sticking with me and I feel like I have to write it. I even have a rough outline for it . . .so it may get finished.
Wow! Already quite a selection of topics and projects!
@Jen W. No worries! You can link to whatever blogs you want. It's interesting to see what other projects readers having going, even if it's a food, fitness, or whatever blog. I love writing for and about non-profits, so your projects sound like fun!
I love seeing what everyone else is working on. It's always so inspiring. As for me, I started a new, part-time assistant editor gig at a web magazine almost two months ago, and they're finally letting me head up some projects that I think will really showcase my abilities…things like managing one of their Twitter accounts and relaunching one of their blogs.
I'm also collaborating with a well-known sex therapist to create content for an iPhone app, and still making my way through my career coaching certification program.
I'm working on a variety of books I'm indexing and starting a new novel which I hope to finish by the end of the year. Here's hoping all of you achieve your writing dreams in 2010! Yay us!
Good luck to everybody on the things they are working on!
I'm using the time following a layoff to work on my blog and finish a novel.
I should be pitching ideas, but focusing on just having fun writing after almost five years at the most recent day job has been nice, so that's what I'm doing.
This is what I'm working on for the next six months. My website, http://www.onviolence.com, material for a new blog, a script re-write, minor brainstorming for a new script, guest posts, and some short stories.
Also, finding a new job.
Thanks Susan! I will happily link away then.
Good luck to everyone with your projects.
Thank you for asking, Susan! I'm editing my book, The Art & Craft of Fiction, to be published in March.
I've been blogging on the craft of fiction for the past year with wonderful response from writers, but since I switched from a blog to a magazine format, I've had enough requests for the old posts that I'm editing them, expanding them, and adding to them so I can offer writers a discussion of the whole smorgasborg: from what it's like to be a writer in this day and age, through in-depth explorations of character, plot, technique, scenes, exposition, et cetera, with a good, solid section on surviving Despair, for those of us who have gotten past the idealistic first draft.
It's been a lot of fun to work on—there's so much to say, and writers are so eager to learn.
I do believe this is the best of times and the worst of times to be an aspiring writer. We are right now living through the years that will define the future of publishing.
best,
Victoria
I'm working on some strengthening projects for a few of my websites, preparing for tax season with my clients, and planning out more in depth training programs for my staff.
Hi Susan,
Great timing for tomorrow I launch my new Blog,
The She Whisperer " How to talk to women".
Looking forward to learning from The Urban Muse.
Best Regards,
J. Michael
A white paper, two articles, eight blog post entries, and two more articles for someone else – all due now.
I am writing the tourism guide for my local area. I am planning the launch for my upcoming book on being an effective director on a non-profit board, "Before You Say Yes …" and I am planning more research travel for my next book. It's good to be busy!
Wow! Quite an array of projects and the comments keep pouring in!
@Victoria: I'd love to know more about your book, so let us know when it comes out!
@wizardofwords: I've worked (and freelanced) for several nonprofits, so that sounds like a great topic for a book!
Thanks, Susan! I will. In the meantime, please feel free to drop by my blog and chat. I wrote a post yesterday on using a blog to promote your book. Does it really help? I'd love to hear what you or any of your readers has to say about it!
Victoria
I'm working on a YA fantasy novel. I also am developing my blog, sarahaiglen.com, which explores books, writing, and fantasy.
I'm working on a special Green Guide for a regional magazine's Green Issue. Fun and informative!
