It’s always interesting to talk to other freelancers and see what they’re working on. There’s usually a good mix of projects, some of which I’d never even thought of! And in this case, it will be useful for me to know what readers are working on so I can tailor blog posts to their interests.
I just finished up a project writing descriptions of home décor items. I’m also working on website copy for a law firm, a couple of assigned blog posts, and descriptions for a toy catalogue. I should be working on new queries and the ebook project I started a month ago, but somehow the paying projects with client deadlines seem to get in the way.
What about you? What’s on your to-do list and what have you been meaning to write about but haven’t?

This week, I'm writing a feature article for a New York-based magazine, a short article for an environmental site I regularly contribute to, and a slew of news abstracts about the nonprofit sector (that part's for my day job). I'm also in the planning stages with a client on a blog about haircare that I'll write and edit, and I just sent out a handful of pitches to mags, so I'm waiting to hear back on those. Whew! Sounds like a lot when I write it out like that… and I guess it is!
@Lauren: Wow, that does sound like quite a list! Good for you! I checked out your website and the first sample that showed up was about the history of redheads. Loved that!
Thanks! I desperately need to update the samples on my site (um, add that to the list of things I may or may not do this week), but the redhead one was fun
I got back from Prague yesterday, and I'm headed out to the Cape tomorrow on for some articles.
I've downloaded my Prague photos and am getting my notes into shape for a series of articles.
I'll have to write up my articles on the Cape stuff this weekend, plus finish up work on a pet care article.
While I was gone, I heard from an editor — an essay for a book I thought was scrapped is on schedule again, and we're doing revisions.
Plus, I have two residency proposals to get out this weekend, and get back to the novel and the play . . .
I'm working on podcast scripts for folks learning business English. The topics include managing multicultural teams and teleconferences. I hope to work on a health literacy essay this week. And I keep meaning to resurrect my language blog – I really need to make that a priority.
But today I'd like to finish up an assignment for a marketing class I'm taking. Busy, busy, but happily so!
"I should be working on new queries and the ebook project I started a month ago, but somehow the paying projects with client deadlines seem to get in the way."
Oh lord YES. My ebook/book proposal languishes. My career coaching certification program is off to a slow start. And it's frustrating, because these are the things I care about the most.
At the moment, I continue in my role as lead blogger for Nerve.com's Tools of Attraction, a blog that continues to search for its final identity (argh). I have recently completed pieces coming out in New York Press and Time Out New York. I've been working on essay rewrites for something that will hopefully be published in another NY-based newspaper. And I'm mapping out the ultimate NJ wine tour for a NJ magazine.
Lord I need to squeeze in some pitching, submitting, and new client searching. I'm wondering if I should start exploring copywriting as an additional source of income. We'll see.
I am working on writing copy for a website for a history research institute, and reworking a novel to be read as a podcast. I am an academic editor who does a lot of rewriting for doctors and social scientists in an ESL environment. I'm just starting out with freelance writing. I enjoy your blog very much. Thanks
I'm branching out into grant writing, so I'm doing some research. I also have an article to finish, a book review to complete, and my monthly dating column for an e-zine and workplace column for my local paper. I did some major querying over the summer, so I'm hoping some of those articles will see the light, as well.
Working on several ideas for articles for the upcoming holiday gift season along with setting up for my holiday shows as well.
I'm reorganizing my Google Reader to better filter for stories related to Eurasia for my new position as a staff writer on a Eurasia-related news website.
No current clients (yet) but I'm working on also redoing my website to better emphasize that I'm available.
I don't actually have any client work at the moment, but expect an ebook to proofread soon. And, in the meantime, I'm working on my novel–because, that still counts as writing, right?? (grin)
I write about television, and I don't currently have a regular Web client to write about the medium for, so I just launched a blog called Television Will Never Die. I don't usually write for free, but I am willing to do it for myself!
Also, as for what I should be doing, I should be finishing up a couple of essays that I have been working on!
I have one week to write the last three chapters on my WIP to meed my self-imposed deadline.
In the meantime, in order to eat, I'm working on an ebook about self-publishing, gathering material for a software launch for protecting digital work, and trolling for clients for web copy. I'm also working on an interview piece for an up-and-coming musical artist with an album launch in October.
Full plate. I wish more if it were paying. Heh.
I'm wrapping up a personal essay about fruit flies that I'm hoping to shop around in the next bit. I'm also putting the finishing touches on my new fiction website: http://www.jlmartin.ca
Wow! What an assortment of projects we have here. After I posted this, I heard from several clients with new projects, so now I'm busier than ever! Just started an email appeal for a nonprofit and more website copy for the law firm.
I've been writing a lot of reviews lately. And I recently sold a story to a print publication. This will be my second piece with them and it's promising that I'll have more. That's exciting!
I've been writing mainly about health lately. I'm also trying to get more into writing stories about unique people and their unique businesses. It's fun interviewing those subjects!
Michele
I think these are fun.
Just finished a university course catalog formatting/proofread. Today, it's resumes. Next week, I'm watching an online demo of a gig that could become very lucrative (a confidential one at the moment).
And I'm finding lots of time to put into my book manuscript. Free time is there for a reason!
I should be doing research for my thesis, so I can actually start my thesis (a novel) in November. But instead I am feeling overwhelmed y reading for my course this semester. *sigh*
I just finished two stories for a local Guide to Good Health magazine and need to write a profile for a Southern Florida hospital news magazine about a new product on the market. I regularly have assignments from the largest daily newspaper in the city…but I seem to be stuck getting more low paying assignments than I want. Occassionally, I'll get a client that will pay ten times what I'm making for newspapers, but how to I get to the point where am doing mostly well-paying, corporate work?
@Laurie B: Believe me, I wish I could answer that question!
I'm working on new posts for my blog, helping a designer write a cover letter (in exchange for some sweet looking business cards) and trying to outline the ebook I want to write detailing my 2 year stint on the bar/dating scene.
I'm working on two long profiles for a print magazine, one about a Danish fiddler/composer, one about a Canadian songwriter, doing several batches of reviews, and working on a couple of grant proposals to do with Irish music, which will also be the groundwork for book proposals, I think.
researching a couple of travel
articles too.
As ever, I am working on getting more content up on my site and trying to build a platform of fans.
Any ideas for that when you're starting at Ground Zero?

I'm putting the final touches on a book about my relationship with my younger sister. Part of the story is at http://www.mysisterdalesgarden.com what do you think? would you be interested in reading it?
@Miriam: That sounds like a great project! I lost my father last year, so I'm sorry to hear about your sister, and I'm always interested in creative ways of dealing with grief and memorializing a loved one.
I'm working on a feature about an award winning documentary called "The Way We Get By" which makes its television premiere on PBS November 4th. http://www.thewaywegetbymovie.com
I also took some photos at the Common Ground Fair in Maine this past weekend for a photo essay. Fun stuff!
