Ready for My Closeup

Before I publish the obligatory “Happy Holidays” post and call it a year (don’t worry, it’ll be a good end-of-year post, I promise), I just had to share this. My photographer friend Rachel suggested we get together to update my headshots, and I think she did an excellent job of putting me at ease and making me look creative and writerly (I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the most photogenic person on the planet).

I don’t think that every writer’s website needs professionally shot photos, but it certainly helps to create a professional image and put a human face on your writing so editors/client get a sense of the person they’re hiring.

I’m choosing three new photos for my website and random contributor bios, so check out the photo slideshow and weigh in with your faves. And if you’re in the market for a wedding photographer or some family photos, then give Rachel a ring.

  1. Jenny says:

    Very nice, they’re great.

  2. Joanna says:

They look great! It can be worth having professional shots done, I think. I’m also not a fan of being in front of the camera.

My favorites are the ones of you in the blue v-neck sweater, preferably with you smiling. :)

  3. Sal says:

Ok, I think you might be blind if you think you are not photogenic. These shots are awesome! Here are my votes from the slideshow.

    001, 004, 005, 009, 015, 020, 025, 029, 033, 036, 047 and 049

I really liked all of them, but these are the ones I think you should use. Rachel did a fantastic job!

  4. Susan Johnston says:

Thanks, all! I really think Rachel did a stellar job.

  5. Janet Martin says:

Well done! These look great. :)

  6. Patricia Robb says:

I like #4. There are some great shots here.

  7. Michele says:

I think they’re all awesome – very professional and beautiful!! Who says you’re not photogenic, eh? You go girl; you take great pics!!!

    Congrats!

I don’t know Susan – not really many photos to choose from here, huh? :)
They all look great so I did my evaluation based on the creative and writerly look. I picked photo #’s 2,5,21,29, and 33. Your friend Rachel did a great job with the photography and presentation on her site.

  9. Dave Zeman says:

They are all great… I like the shadowy ones the best… I always read in the shadows… HA.

    Gorrrrrr-geous! Thanks for sharing. :)

  11. Susan Johnston says:

Thanks, everyone! I was thinking back to when Rachel and I first met and did a photo shoot together two years ago… She was still working part time and ramping up her photography business, while I was working full time and seriously doubting I’d ever be able to freelance full time. Now look at us!!

  12. Michael says:

I like the last one on the bottom right the best. FOr sure you should use it on your blog.

  13. Anali says:

Those are some great shots! You have a ton to choose from. I like the black and white ones especially. One that was really cool was with you holding up the book in silhouette.

  14. Michelle Rafter says:

They’re all great! I like b/w best, also the black chalkboard type backdrop. Like the first one of you w/laptop, also of you reclining on the couch w/notebook – very Carrie Bradshaw. And the last one of you in the blk peacoat – perfect book jacket author photo! See, now you have to write a book because you have the perfect pix for it.

  15. Susan Johnston says:

@Michelle: I think you’re right! I will have to write a book now. I’m proud to say that while Rachel suggested most of the poses, the Carrie Bradshaw pose was all me. :)

And I’m so glad that Grub Street was willing to let us use their space, because it really set the right literary tone.

  16. Megan says:

Speaking as a photographer myself, these are fantastic! I especially love the backlit one where you’re holding a book. Kudos to your friend Rachel!
