A little birdy told me that the November issue of The Writer (featuring an article by yours truly) has just hit newstands. I've written a lot about online networking, but this article focuses on good old-fashioned networking face-to-face: choosing which events to attend, overcoming nerves, breaking the ice, and following up afterwards.
Unfortuantely, the article isn't available online, so I can't link to it. Instead I'm going to link to some online resources about in-person networking.

I just read the Six Essentials for Networking, and there's some great advice. The issue I struggle with the most, especially here in Las Vegas, is the large amount of mixers, networking events, etc. that I could attend -- I could go to two a day. Of course, if I had a crystal ball, I would know which events are worth it and which are not. Sans crystal ball, I try to limit my events to the relevant ones in my field -- translation, localization, copywriting, Hispanic marketing -- but of course, networking is very unpredictable and we make some of our best connections while, say, hiking, or shopping for goat cheese at Trader Joe's. As a relative newcomer to entrepreneurship, I am still trying to figure out how to best allocate my time. The local chambers of commerce have been fantastic for me, above all, the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce. However, whenever I choose not to go to a networking event I am always fearful that I missed something -- and surely I am not alone with this!
Nobody can hit every networking event; otherwise you'd never get any actual work done! I think you're wise to seize those unexpected opportunities for networking and keep going back to events from organizations that you like.
Way to go, Susan!! Congrats on a cool byline! I'll pick this one up this weekend.
