Several freelance writers I know swear by the marketing power of their monthly newsletter, so I've decided to give it a try. I write lots of email newsletters for clients, so why not write my own, too? Starting in September, I will be sending out The Urban Museletter once a month.
I anticipate including highlights from the blog, but there will be original content, too: writing tips, tidbits, and possibly a few interviews with other freelancers or book reviews thrown in.
To build up my subscriber list, I'm offering a little incentive to those who subscribe by next Monday, August 25. I will choose one reader at random to receive a free copy of MAP Boston (or the equivalent in Amazon.com dollars if you have no plans to visit Beantown). Though I can't promise freebies every month, I do hope to make them a semi-regular happening. Sign up here.
Like what you've read so far? Sign up for The Urban Museletter and get monthly tips, tidbits, and more on the freelance life delivered right to your email. Also, check out my guest post on 5 Tips for Inviting Guest Bloggers to Blog for You.

Sweet...I think I am the first to sign up. I can't wait, especially for the tips and tricks and whatnot. Looking forward to the Newsletter Susan. Thanks for all the hard work, and if you need any help, or would just like someone to bounce ideas off of, I am always free.
I was so excited that I forgot to get the follow-ups. oops.
Awesome ... I look forward to reading it!
I've been enjoying your blog and look forward to your newsletter. I've thought about starting one myself, but.... I used to write a monthly newsletter when I gigged (chick folk rock) and that was a lot of fun. I'm just not sure I'd have that much to write about writing. :)
This is a really cool idea, Susan. I look forward to the newsletter! I'm curious, though: how will you market it and to whom?
@Amanda: that's a great question. Part of my inspiration was from wanting to keep friends and colleagues in the loop even if they don't read my blog (some of them just aren't blog readers by nature). I've sent out a couple of mass emails to these people, but I don't want to spam them, so I set up an opt-in list.
Then I figured, "why not open it up my blog readers, too?" After all, it will be partly an extension of the blog and another way to connect with readers (some of whome have already referred me to clients - yay!).
I could go crazy marketing it in my email signature line, on Facebook, and other places, but I don't think I want to do that yet. I'll build up the list with a small, interested group first and see how it goes for a few months first.
Fellow freelancer Kristen King has a newsletter called Notes in the Margain (http://notes-in-the-margin.com), so mine will a little like that except I don't plan to outsource content at this point. Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks for the info, Susan. Now I'm REALLY itching for my first copy!
I've signed up, Susan. I thought I had commented here, too! hmmm...
Anyway, I'm excited for my first copy as well. I LOVE how you call it The Urban Museletter. How awesome is that? You cool gal, you!
Here's wishing you all the best!
*smiles*
