That was a great idea for an article. How to diversify when the market is tight. You created an opportunity to write about how hard it is to find writing opportunities. Great job.

  2. Susan Johnston says:

@Patricia: thanks for the complement! It was a great way for me to research other options. I’m actually taking a proofreading class right now, but I’ve been too busy to pursue that as a money-making pursuit!

Even though I’ve been reading your blog for a while, it was nice to revisit some of your favorite posts. In “Six Ways to Network Between Projects,” you mention getting testimonials from editors. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach your editor with this request? I’m building my web page right now and wondered how you handled it. Thanks!

  4. Susan Johnston says:

@Kristen: Just ask! When an editor emails you saying “I really appreciate you doing a thorough reporting job” or “if only all my writers were this organized,” that’s a great time to ask. I had a client say “I only wish we could afford to pay you more,” and that’s what I pounced, asking her for a recommendation. It should be editors you have a relationship with, rather than those who’ve assigned you one or two articles. Most will be happy to do it. :)

  5. Kristen Tribe says:

@Susan: Same “Kristen” here … I just changed my display name. Anyway, thanks for the tips! That’s a good way to go about it. If they’re giving you a compliment, see if you can get it in writing! :)
