- Hang out with frugal friends. They'll be more likely to understand why you can't split an expensive bottle of wine or spend the weekend at a fancy resort.
- Check out books and movies from the library instead of buying.
- Volunteer as a hair model and get your hair cut or styled for free.
- Find out when your local museum has a free night and time your trip accordingly.
- Make lunch at home and reheat the leftovers for dinner.
- If you must eat out, take advantage of happy hour specials.

Coupons.
If I'm going out to eat with friends, I try to pick a place that has some type of coupon or deal. For home needs, coupons from the Sunday paper are great... and even better if I hold on to the coupons until the items are on sale (usually about three weeks) - then I get double savings. The popular grocery chain in Milwaukee (Pick n' Save) even has "double coupon day" on the last Wednesday of every month... I've saved more than $20 on some trips just from coupons.
@yana: Good point! I'm a fan of coupons as well, especially those big blue coupons that Bed, Bath & Beyond sends out periodically.
Susan,
I enjoyed your tips here and at Freelance Switch.
I've just been thinking of this, in terms of making sure I'm spending on things I really value. Great post!
Cooking at home, using the library to check out CDs before I download on iTunes, and resisting impulse buys has really helped. Oh, and for a book fanatic like me, the 20-40% coupons at Borders Rewards are fabulous!
Great tips, and I've just got to throw in my two cents here... Make DINNER at home and reheat the leftovers for LUNCH! (It works both ways, plus you can often stretch dinner leftovers into 3 more servings)...
@dina: good point about dinner! Very true.
