In the last 48 hours I’ve gone from one writing assignment to FOUR (plus I just sold a reprint of this article), and I just passed the 200 query mark. I also got two responses from editors asking for more info. Not bad… It really is feast or famine in the freelancing biz, isn’t it? Still trying to crack some of my dream markets, but I’m feeling optimistic right now.

Susan,
There is something in the water because I am having a huge writing month too. Working on two articles and two weekly blogging gigs.
Lets hope this doesn’t cool off!
Sandra, I just got ANOTHER assignment. I’m going to have to cool it on the querying if I want to actually finish these articles!
What are your dream markets, Susan? I have a query article for beginners over at my blog, but it could be useful to someone at your level, too.
Lori, I’ve been reading your posts on queries and picked up some good tips! Dream markets include Self, Boston Globe (specifically “Coupling” or “View from the Cube”), Daily Candy, and things of that ilk.
Feast or famine is right. Glad you are having such a succesful time of it!!
And you know a week ago, I was like “what happened to all my writing projects?” Things can turn around very quickly, and I’m a little concerned that 75% of my assignments right now are from the same pub (good money while it lasts, but it’s safer to diversify).
